Mumbai Indians

Mumbaikars are bracing up for their team to launch an aggressive charge this year, says this fan.

The Indian T20 series has so many matches. I hope I can catch them all. If I were still a kid, I would’ve said work can wait.

The Indian T20 series isn’t the first time this sort of thing has been attempted, but it certainly makes for a good show. A bit of cool trivia that I came across recently was that the Indian T20 series has had precedents in the past, when Kerry Packer, an Aussie businessman came up with the seminal World Series Cricket. While not the same as the Indian T20 series, it treaded similar ground and fascinatingly also marked the entry of the helmet in the sport. The WSC took place in the late 70s, but never took off.

Welcome to the 21st century and the Indian T20 series is the big thing. The thing about the Indian T20 series is that one can’t miss the celeb factor; you get SRK and people will follow him. Imagine the chemistry of the big man (okay he isn’t huge) and the big game (got that one right?). And then you rustle up enough celebrity athletes to the mix and voila the concoction for success is here.

I still root for ‘aapla’ Sachin, who I am sure, is going to break his own record again. I have a friend who thinks Sachin breaking his own record isn’t all that fun anymore. I think it’s like eating ‘pav bhaji’, no matter how many times you eat it; you don’t get enough of it. Being a casual cricket fan makes me somewhat less zealous about the sport, but it probably makes my happiness at every victory a little alloyed.
